For many drivers, winter is not one of the most popular seasons of the year. While we certainly enjoy the beauty of the snowy landscape, it is almost exclusively for the passengers. Those behind the wheel usually have other things to worry about this time of year.Obviously, road conditions this time of year are different from other seasons. We encounter ice, snow, and low temperatures, each of which can be a real nuisance. Therefore, it is understandable that special rules need to be followed if one is to drive safely.
The first thing to do is to adjust your speed to the road conditions. This usually means driving slowly, and I am sure many of us would not appreciate that. However, speeding can also be deadly, as ice can be hidden under a thin layer of snow, especially in the dark, and ice can go unnoticed. This also means longer braking distances. This fact must also be kept in mind when approaching a crosswalk (since pedestrians usually do not notice crosswalks) or when overtaking. Here, one may pose a danger not only to oneself but also to other road users.
If you do not have a garage, you must get up early and pay close attention to your car before leaving. The windows must be scrubbed and the engine must be started and warmed up. Otherwise, the engine may fail at an inopportune time. Be aware that animals such as cats and marten often find places under the hood or under the wheels to escape the cold. Therefore, it is always a good idea to make sure there are no stowaways.
The wheels of cars also need attention. The road salt that road crews spread on the road is not good for tires. Sure, it\’s still better than ice, but caution in this regard can\’t hurt.Similarly, it is a good idea to replace tires with winter tires that are better suited for winter conditions.Of course, this may seem complicated, but trust us, these measures can save your life.
